2023 election: Only 10.1% of candidates are women — Report

A cursory examination of the data on the final list of political candidates vying for various national and state elective positions in the 2023 polls reveals that the raging marginalisation of women in Nigerian politics is far from over.

In the data analysis, released by the Campaign for Democracy and Development, and obtained on Thursday, there are only 1552 women among the total of 15307 contestants seeking elective positions in next year’s polls.

This number of females in the election represents 10.1 percent of the candidates.

Out of the 18 political parties in the country, only the Allied People’s Movement (APM) fielded a female presidential candidate. And no single political party fielded a female vice-presidential candidate.

For the gubernatorial election, out of the 419 candidates vying to be governors, only 25 are women, which represents 6 percent. Also out of the 419 deputy-governorship candidates, 102 are women candidates, which is 24 percent.

Also for the senate, out of the 1,101 candidates gunning for the 109 Senatorial seats, 92 are women, representing 8.35 percent while 286 women are contesting for the House of Representatives out of the total 3,107 candidates.

Then for the States House of Assembly, out of the 10225 candidates, only 1046 are women.

The regional analysis of the data shows that the Southwest nominated more women than the southeast, which has the highest numbers in 2019.

And among all the 36 states of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos state tops with the highest of female candidates.

In addition, both APC (102) and PDP (72) have a total of 174 female candidates.
