70 varsities end FASU Games in Lagos Games

The 11th edition of the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games came to a close on Sunday in Lagos, with American University in Cairo emerging as the overall champion.

 

The nine-day tournament, jointly hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU), saw a total of 70 universities from across Africa participating.

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, expressed pride in the students who participated, saying, “I am proud of all the students that participated and won different shades of medals. You have not only competed for medals but have also represented the spirit of unity that is essential in our pursuit of excellence.”

LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, also commended the participants, stating, “Lagos 2024 demonstrated how sports can serve as a tool for African unity. Together with UNILAG, we have given Lagos and Nigeria a worthy representation.”

The tournament featured 17 sports, with 834 athletes (590 males and 244 females) and 185 institutional officials participating. Team UNILAG won a total of 98 medals, while LASU came second, and UNILAG third.

 

The Secretary-General of FASU, Ms. Peninnah Aligawesa, presented the games torch to the vice-chancellors of LASU and UNILAG, who in turn handed it over to the American University in Cairo for the next hosting.
