The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has refuted claims that it has raised its examination registration fee.

In recent times, there have been publications insinuating that the Board has increased the cost of obtaining its UTME application documents.

However, JAMB has clarified that the price remains at N3,500, the same as it has been since 2018 when it was reduced from N5,000.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday by Fabian Benjamin, Ph.D., JAMB Public Communication Advisor(PCA).

Despite the prevailing economic situation in the country, which has affected the Board’s operations, JAMB asserts that it has not increased the cost of application documents.

The Board assures the public that it is making efforts to ensure that candidates are not burdened in any way. One of the measures taken is providing the Use of English reading text free of charge through a QR code.

This is to prevent passing on the increased production cost to candidates. The reading text will be accessible through various channels, including candidates’ profiles, email addresses, notification slips, and the Board’s website.

JAMB emphasizes that the perceived fee increment is a result of its cashless policy. Under this policy, all fees payable by candidates to CBT (Computer-Based Test) centers have been consolidated and are paid along with their application fees.

This is to prevent exploitation by unscrupulous center owners. The fees collected are then remitted to partnering centers on a weekly basis.

For example, candidates are required to pay N700 for registration, N1,500 as examination fees, and N1,500 for the optional Mock-UTME at privately-owned centers. In conclusion, JAMB assures the public that it is committed to keeping costs low for candidates and ensuring a fair and transparent examination process.

It is also worthy to note that the Board had been resisting the call by its partnering and privately-owned centres for a drastic increase in the cost of the services they render to the candidates as a consequence of the current economic situation to which the Board has always maintained that its services are not for profit.

For the avoidance of doubt, the 2024 UTME/DE e-PIN remains N3500. The registration fee of N700, which is to be paid to CBT centres by candidates, is now to be collected by the Board along with N1500, which is the cost for sitting the main UTME, and N1500 as the cost of the optional Mock-UTME etc are to be collected by the Board on behalf of the CBT centres.
