A technical glitch has brought air travel in the United States to a standstill, with several major airlines grounding all flights due to a communication issue.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the ground stop on Friday, which affects all flights from Delta, United, American Airlines, and Allegiant, regardless of their destination.

According to the FAA, the ground stop is in place due to a communication issue, but it is unclear how long it will last.

The FAA suggested an update would be available by 5 a.m. ET. This comes after a significant Microsoft outage brought Frontier Airlines to a standstill for hours on Thursday, although the ground stop for those airlines has since been lifted.

The technical issue has also affected other airlines, including Allegiant and SunCountry, which reported difficulties with their booking, check-in, and trip-managing functions online.

Microsoft said that service went down for some customers in the central United States around 6 p.m. ET, “including failures with service management operations and connectivity or availability of services.”

The company said it determined the cause and is working to fix it.

The grounding of flights has caused inconvenience to passengers, with some taking to social media to express their frustration.

The FAA and airlines are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible to minimize disruptions to air travel.
