A former minister of information, Labaran Maku, says Nigeria’s future is great, urging its youths not to be afraid but only believe.

Maku was Guest Speaker at the 2024 valedictory service of Crown Heights College in Ibadan on Saturday.

While acknowledging the sense of discouragement about the country, he said Nigeria is not destined to be where it is now.  “ No condition is permanent, Nigeria survived by accident of history, by God’s factor, no nation is in a permanent situation. Nigerian youths belong to a great country,’’ he said.

He appealed to the youths not to concentrate on the negatives. “You have the responsibility to develop a sound character because education alone is not enough.

The internet is a great place of learning but also a warehouse of unwholesome things. It is important to know how to pick the positives and reject the negatives,’’ he counselled the graduating class where Eunice Adekunjo was the valedictorian.

Special Guest at the ceremony and Chairman, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, urged the secondary  school leavers to be focused and make God their foundation. To him, the only proof of success is making a mark in one’s chosen area of interest. “It doesn’t matter what you choose to pursue in life, what matters most is being the best in everywhere you find yourself.’’

When Crown Heights College was established in 1997, the mission was clear-to provide quality education to the mass of Nigeria’s younger generation. The goal was to arm the youngsters with knowledge by providing a conducive environment where they can be nurtured and well educated.

The school’s Proprietor,  Prince Gbadebo Adeyeye, said the school has lived up to its mission, explaining that  its  products over the years are  worthy testaments of the positive impacts of the school on their lives.  The school also now provides education to nursery and primary school pupils.

Prince Adeyeye in his remarks , observed that no matter Nigeria’s situation, the future is still bright and belongs to the youth.

To effect a change, the graduating students were counselled to identify areas of failure and work towards bringing the country to a point where people from other nations would love to come to Nigeria.

The valedictorian, Adekunjo, said the school had grown in capacity since they were admitted and urged her colleagues to be charitable to their alma mater.

She expressed gratitude to their parents, their educators at all levels as well as all members of staff of the college.

Outstanding graduating students went home with cash and other awards even as the renowned author, Dr. Olayiwola Adejare Lawal, advised the graduating class to be resolute and think of providing local solutions to Nigeria’s problems.

Recalling the motivation behind his authorship of popular O.A Lawal series on Economics, he said it was borne out of his conviction to make the subject of economics easily comprehensible and enjoyable for better learning experience and pupils’  performance
