The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has criticized the unbundling of Mass Communication in tertiary institutions, stating that it is untimely and will limit the opportunities of unemployed graduates.

According to the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, “We need to be broader, given the level of our under-development. It is important to keep Mass Communication at the undergraduate level.”

He added that many graduates are unemployed and narrowing down their opportunities to a particular discipline would also limit their chances of getting jobs.

Oloyede made this statement while speaking at the 15th anniversary of the University of Ilorin’s 89.3FM Radio Station.

He argued that specialization in Mass Communication should be restricted to the postgraduate level, as Nigeria is still developing and has not reached the stage for such development.

The JAMB boss emphasized that Mass Communication graduates are recognized locally and internationally, and that studying Mass Communication opens up many career opportunities.

He advised candidates to be equipped with the correct information on subject combinations during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
