ACSPN Conference 2024: Experts Call for Collaboration in Digital Communication, Governance

The Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) held its 11th Annual Conference and General Meeting in Lagos, Nigeria, from September 3rd to 5th, 2024.

The conference themed “Digital Communication and Governance in Africa” brought together scholars, practitioners, and government officials to discuss the challenges and opportunities of digital communication in governance.

In his keynote address, Dapo Olarunyom, publisher of Premium Times, highlighted the crises facing the news media industry in Africa and the need for collaboration between media scholars, practitioners, government, and civil society to address these challenges.

He emphasized the importance of deploying AI ethically to ensure good governance.

The conference deliberated on several key issues, including the need for network and relationship management among communication scholars and practitioners, building communication institutions, literature, research, and collaborative research efforts between mass communication and computer science scholars and practitioners.

The conference adopted several resolutions, including the need for communication scholars and practitioners to conduct research partnerships, engage in interdisciplinary collaborative research, and develop policies on AI, fact-checking, and verification.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Umaru Pate, President of ACSPN, emphasized the importance of implementing the resolutions and working together to build communication scholarship and practice in Nigeria.
