Nigeria today worse than during military regime – Amaechi

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has opined that Nigeria’s current state of affairs is worse than during the military regime.

The former Rivers governor said this at the ex-augural lecture and book launch of the outgoing Punch Newspaper editor Dayo Oketola, which took place at Muson Centre,  Lagos, on Tuesday.

Nigeria has continued to experience unprecedented socio-economic realities in recent times, with inflation and fuel prices soaring to astronomical heights since the current Bola Tinubu-led administration took over in May 2023.

“You don’t call politicians to talk because they will spoil the occasion,” he said during his terse speech.

Referring to previous statements made by journalists at the event recounting their experiences from the past, Amaechi said, “I heard some journalists say ‘we lived in the trenches’. Which trenches? During the military regime? Is that time worse than now?”

Oketola, who worked with PUNCH for 16 years, also launched his book, “The Catalyst: Nigerian Tech Evolution Through a Journalist’s Lens”.

The event, chaired by former CEO, of MTN Nigeria, Michael Ikpoki, was attended by dignitaries and representatives, including former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who was the special guest speaker at the event.

Other parties represented included Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho; Provost, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye; Chairman, Editorial Board, The PUNCH, Obafemi Obadare; Representatives of the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Aminu Maida; representatives of the ministry of information and national orientation.
