The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed strong condemnation of the recent tuition hike at the University of Ibadan (UI), labeling the decision as oppressive and detrimental to student welfare.

In a statement released in Ibadan, NANS called for immediate intervention from the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders.

The tuition increase prompted UI management to announce a three-week break for students, starting from August 31 to September 20, 2024, following a series of protests.

NANS Senate President Akinteye Babatunde criticized Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale for ignoring student concerns, stating that the fee hike has created significant hardship for many.

Babatunde described the break as a calculated move to silence dissent and weaken student union efforts against perceived injustices.

He emphasized that the Vice-Chancellor’s actions demonstrate a disregard for student welfare, noting the failure to engage with student representatives on the issue.

He praised the Students Union and initiatives like NELFUND, which provide financial support to students affected by the increase.

Without such assistance, he warned, many would be forced to abandon their studies due to financial constraints.

NANS is urging a swift response from the Federal Government to address what it calls the “oppressive” policies of UI management, reiterating that student interests should take precedence over administrative gains.
