Obaseki Accuses Ex-Governor of Using Police Resources to Aid Opposition Campaign

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has accused a former governor of misusing police resources, specifically a helicopter, to support the opposition’s campaign for the forthcoming governorship election.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obaseki characterised the election as a critical juncture for the state, underscoring the determination of Edo citizens to thwart the All Progressives Congress (APC) from regaining power.

Obaseki voiced serious concerns about the implications of an APC victory, stating, “If you know what happened in the last few weeks, you would worry for Nigeria.”

He highlighted the disparity in security arrangements, claiming that the former governor enjoys more police protection than he does as the sitting governor.

“Armed policemen in the state are trying to arrest political opponents. Two people were abducted this afternoon in Esan Central,” he added, emphasising the troubling trend of police bias during the election period.

The governor criticised the police for what he deemed selective investigations, noting, “The IGP has said he was investigating, but this has led to detaining individuals without trial for over three weeks.”

Obaseki lamented that those arrested were charged with illegal possession of firearms instead of murder, complicating the narrative surrounding the political tensions.

With the election looming, Obaseki remains adamant about the need for vigilance among the electorate, asserting, “Edo people aren’t dumb; they don’t need Wike to know whom to vote for.”

He further expressed concerns about potential plans to manipulate the election in favour of the APC, urging citizens to stay informed and united in their decision-making.
