In a blistering attack on his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has accused him of having no respect for the citizens of Edo State, particularly women, and encouraging prostitution and human trafficking.

Obaseki made these scathing remarks while addressing a PDP rally in the Ekemwan region of the state on Saturday.

He also issued a dire warning that the upcoming governorship election in the state is a matter of life and death and that any misconduct by the rival party could have fatal consequences.

“The person I took over from had no respect for our people, had no respect for women, encouraged prostitution and women trafficking,” Obaseki said. “When I took over office, our pensioners wore black on Labour Day, but today they wear white. When I took office, our youths had no jobs, but today don’t they have jobs? After eight years, is Edo not one of the safest in Nigeria?”

Obaseki’s comments are a clear reference to his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, who served as governor from 2008 to 2016.

The Edo State governor is seeking re-election and faces competition from Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the APC, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

The election is scheduled to take place on September 21, and Obaseki has warned that any misconduct by the rival party could have fatal consequences.

“This election is a do or die, if they do, we will die. Next week Saturday by this time, vote for PDP to become the next governor,” he said.
