The House of Representatives has instituted a ban on journalists from covering its ongoing investigative hearing concerning the ₦15 million corruption allegations linked to crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS).

This decision was communicated to members of the House press corps by the Joint Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Services, which asserted that media coverage of the investigation would not be permitted.

This abrupt policy shift follows an earlier invitation to the press to report on the proceedings, raising questions about transparency and accountability.

The investigation was prompted by a motion adopted last Thursday, aiming to probe claims that the EFCC accepted ₦15 million from Bobrisky in connection to his recent legal troubles.

The allegations have gained traction following a report from social media influencer Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, who accused Bobrisky of serving his court-imposed sentence outside of a correctional facility.

Bobrisky has vehemently denied these allegations, which have since attracted significant public attention. In light of the inquiry, the federal government has taken preliminary steps, suspending officials responsible for managing the maximum and minimum custodial centers in Kirikiri, Lagos State.

Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), confirmed this development, stating, “The suspension of the officers is to allow for further investigation into the various allegations, assuring that the outcome will be made public when concluded.”

As the investigation unfolds, concerns regarding the potential implications for those involved, including the EFCC’s integrity, continue to escalate.

Meanwhile, Bobrisky has retaliated against VeryDarkMan, filing a ₦1 billion lawsuit for defamation amidst the escalating controversy.
