A yet-to-be-identified woman has accused an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service of sexually harassing her and her daughter.
The woman said the incident happened at the Ikeja Passport Office when they went there to renew their passports on 10 Jan.
Narrating her ordeal in a video, the woman said she and her daughter were at the passport office till some minutes to 6 pm.
She said she and her daughter were called to join the last set of persons to be attended to for the day but were stopped by an officer identified as OB Ogbeifun, who reportedly stopped them because according to him, her daughter was not properly dressed.
The woman said she protested that the girl’s entire body was covered in a jumpsuit that she wore. But the officer insisted that they would not be let in because her daughter was not wearing a bra underneath the jumpsuit.
She recounted, “We just got back home from the passport office of the Nigeria Immigration Service at Alausa, Ikeja. My daughter and I were there since morning. About some minutes to their closing hour at 6 pm, they asked all of us to go out. But one of the officers said since my daughter and I were the next persons on the line, we should be allowed to do the data capture.
“However, one officer, OB Ogbeifun, started creating trouble. He said what my daughter was wearing was not acceptable. My daughter wore a jumpsuit. Then he started sexually harassing my daughter. He told my daughter, ‘Look at her, look at her breasts, you’re not wearing a bra.’ She said my daughter was dressed like a prostitute.

“Another officer then intervened. He said we should beg Ogbeifun to allow us to do the data capture. I got up to go and meet Ogbeifun. I told him that what my daughter was wearing covered her body and he should let us in.

“He insisted we could not enter. I then demanded where it was written in the constitution that my daughter could not do data capture because of her dressing. The officer became furious and twisted my arm to the back. I’ve been in pain since then. I went there for passport renewal. He almost beat us up until his colleagues intervened.”
The woman pleaded to Nigerians to come to her aid and help put an end to people in power harassing the citizens.
NIS spokesperson Mr Amos Okpu said an investigation had commenced into the incident.
“We are currently investigating the issue. I have personally spoken with the woman in the video, and we are going to issue a statement when the investigation is concluded,” he said.
