Head coach of the Nigerian senior national team, Jose Peseiro, has revealed his worst game of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, AFCON.

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong had converted a spot kick won by Victor Osimhen midway through the second half to put the three-time African champions ahead, but South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena fired back from the spot in the 90th minute to take the game to extra time.

Osimhen thought he had fired Nigeria to victory, but his effort was ruled out by the referee, who pointed to the spot in the other direction.

“It was crazy. I think it was worse for the players. After that, we had some very bad minutes, the worst in the competition,” Peseiro told SPORT.

“We lost focus on the game and were on the verge of losing. However, I am happy because, after that hard moment, the team stood up once again. That answer gave me confidence.”
