Lionel Messi won a record seventh Ballon d’Or trophy on Monday night.

The forward won the Copa America with Argentina in July after enduring years of pressure from critics and fellow countrymen. This was probably the deciding factor on the night, as the PSG striker won only a Copa del Rey trophy domestically.

He led his former club Barcelona in scoring in the 2020/2021 season scoring 30 goals and winning the Pichichi trophy for a record 8th time. The forward’s contribution’s saw the Spanish giants finish 3rd on the La Liga table, despite an underwhelming overall performance from the team. Barcelona has endured a tumultuous season after the exit of Messi, currently sitting at 7th place in the Spanish league.
