Bayero University to exempt blind candidates from writing post UTME

Bayero University Kano (BUK) has renewed its admission policy of exempting blind candidates from writing the post-UTME test provided they choose the university as their first choice this year.

In addition to this, such candidates will also enjoy another concession of 150 as the minimum cut-off marks no matter the approved cut – off points for admission to the university, according to the Vice Chancellor of BUK, Professor Yahuza Bello.

He disclosed this in an interview with a member of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Civil Society and Mass Media group for the 2020 UTME at the university’s School of Continuing Education, the UTME special centre for Visually Impaired Candidates from the 13 North-East and North-West geographical zones.

The Deputy Coordinator of the Special UTME Centre, Professor Salisu Shehu, said 115 of the 122 registered blind candidates came from the 13 states and sat for the two- day examination.

He said the examination was jointly supervised and coordinated by members of the Equal Opportunity Group made up of 10 professors and seven Doctors of Philosophy (PhDs) who are all trained and experienced special Educationists and about 20 Proctors.

Commenting on the conduct of the examination, a former head of Special Education Department at BUK, Professor Jibrin Isa Ahmed, commended the Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Professor Is’haq Oloyede, for providing hotel accommodation and feeding to all the blind candidates and their guides during their three days stay in Kano as well as payment of their transport fares.

Professor Jibrin Ahmed, a visually Impaired person, who was a former Special Adviser on the Physically Challenged to the then Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau (2003 to 2011) also commended the Senate and the VC of BUK for the special consideration given to the candidates in the admission policy and urged other universities to do same.
