Benue State University (BSU) has taken a bold step to enforce a new dress code, prohibiting certain hairstyles and outfits deemed inappropriate.

The university’s management, through a task force committee, issued a statement on Saturday outlining the specific guidelines and warning of sanctions for non-compliance.

According to the committee’s statement, male students are expected to refrain from sagging, wearing makeup, dreadlocks, hair dyeing, shorts or three-quarter trousers to lectures, leaving hair uncombed, sporting armless shirts, earrings, and other listed indecencies.

Similarly, female students are urged to avoid body-hugging clothes, armless attire, dyed hair, short skirts, exposure of sensitive body parts, leg chains, nose rings, multiple earrings, folding shirts on trousers or skirts, and various related indecencies.

The statement emphasizes that students must adhere to these rules, and any failure to comply will result in sanctions imposed by the university management.

This move by Benue State University aligns with a trend observed in Nigerian universities, where institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University and Adekunle Ajasin University have also recently introduced dress codes.

In August 2023, Obafemi Awolowo University made headlines by banning skimpy dresses and those covering faces, along with restrictions on various clothing items, hairstyles, and accessories.

The growing trend of universities implementing strict dress codes reflects a broader effort to maintain a certain standard of appearance on campuses, sparking discussions about individual expression versus institutional regulations in academic settings.
