‘Black Panther’ actress Connie Chiume dies at 72

Connie Chiume, the South African actress renowned for her role in the 2018 Marvel film ‘Black Panther’, has passed away at the age of 72.

Chiume’s death was confirmed by her family in a statement on Instagram on Wednesday.

The family revealed she died at at hospital on Tuesday. However, the cause of death was not disclosed.

“The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume,” the statement reads.

“Connie Chiume 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on the 6th August 2024. The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.”

In a tribute to her on X, the South African government described Chiume as a “legend” and stated that “her outstanding work will always be remembered”.

Born in 1952 to a Malawian father and a Zulu mother, Chiume’s showbiz career spanned over four decades.

Before embarking on her entertainment journey, she trained as a nurse and worked as a teacher.

Her foray into showbiz began in 1977 when she joined the musical show ‘Sola Sola’, which toured internationally.

She recently starred in the hit South African series ‘Gomora’ and appeared in Beyoncé’s visual album ‘Black Is King’.
