Workers in the power sector have threatened to shut down the country’s electricity supply due to ongoing labour disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
According to reports the Organised Labour has directed workers in the Power sector to down tools and commence an indefinite strike.
Under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees, as a prelude to the strike, the aggrieved workers are scheduled to demonstrate at the Abuja national Headquarters of TCN Monday.
In a circular by the General Secretary of NUEE, Joe Ajaero, titled “Call for Action”, to Senior Assistant General Secretaries and Zonal Organising Secretaries dated August 15, 2022, the Union directed them to ensure total compliance.
Meanwhile, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has asked the federal government to rescind the plans to privatise the TCN.

Speaking at the end of her National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, the president of the congress, Festus Osifo said the congress’ opposition to the planned privatisation was hinged on past actions by the federal government.
Furthermore, Osifo said congress is opposing the plans because Nigerians would be at the receiving end if such is allowed.

“TUC takes a complete exception to this and also frown at this, because the privatisation that have been done in the past, where has it led us? The privatisation done before now, where are we today? In 2012, 2013, the privatisation process started and at the end of the day, the Discos and the GenCos were privatised.
“But do we have more lights today than we had pre-privatisation? The answer clearly is no,” Osifo said.
