There are strong indications that the crack in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party may be widening as the former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, on Wednesday, made a renewed case for a southern presidency despite the emergence of a northern presidential candidate for the party in its last presidential primary.

Recall that the former vice president Atiku Abubakar had emerged as the candidate of the PDP in its presidential primary.

The former VP subsequently picked the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his vice presidential candidate, a decision that did not go down well with some party members, especially Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, who came second in the primary.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State had on Wednesday urged the leadership of the PDP, to go to  Wike, and appeal to him.

He insisted that the PDP had treated Wike, a former presidential aspirant of the party, badly.

Ortom, who appeared on Arise TV on Wednesday morning, also claimed that it was Wike who brought him back to the PDP in 2015 when he was treated unjustly.

“Why do you just send calls to Wike, you should have to go to him,” Ortom said.

“When people left the party, Wike was on the ground. It was Wike that brought me back to PDP when I was treated unjustly.

However, in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon, Fayose stated that it must be a southern presidency or nothing.

According to him, the current president of Nigeria is a two-term northern presidency, thus implying that the next president must come from the southern part of the country.

“The PDP Constitution provides for a rotational Presidency. Section 3(c) provides that the Party shall pursue its aims & objectives by “adhering to the policy of the rotation & zoning of Party & Public elective offices in pursuance of the principle of equity, justice and fairness.”

He also hinted that Nigerians should expect details of what would happen soon.

His tweet: “The current President of Nigeria is a 2-term Northern Presidency, thus implying that it MUST be a Southern Presidency in 2023 or NOTHING. Awa ‘South’ lo kan’. Nigerians should await details soon.”

Fayose is a known ally of Wike in the last PDP presidential primary.
