He  was removed at the council meeting  held at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission, Abuja.

His removal was criticised by the university community prompting the  Federal Government to direct  the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council, University of Lagos, Dr. Wale Babalakin and the sacked Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to step aside from their official duties pending the outcome of a Special Visitation Panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the crisis rocking the institution.

Babalakin has since resigned his position as the chairman of council.

Although the Ministry of Education has not officially confirmed the story, Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, is expected to brief the media on the outcome of the UNILAG visitation panel on Wednesday.
