The Court of Appeal has disqualified Chijioke Okereke, a member of the Labour Party who served as the representative for the Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River Federal Constituency.

The court rejected Okereke’s appeal against the Enugu State National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal’s earlier decision to discharge him.

The panel ruled that Anayo Onwuegbu of the Peoples Democratic Party was the genuine winner of the election; in a ruling on Monday, the Court determined that there was not enough evidence to sustain the appeal against this decision.

The panel declared Onwuegbu the rightful winner of the February 25 election, dismissing Okereke.

Onwuegbu had appeared before the tribunal to challenge Okereke’s declaration, claiming he was ignorant of the election because his name was not on the Labour Party’s candidate file.
