The Federal High Court in Abuja has given the green light to Dr. Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election.

Justice James Omotosho’s judgment, delivered on Wednesday, dismissed Philip Shaibu’s case challenging Ighodalo’s nomination.

The court’s ruling confirmed Ighodalo’s victory in the PDP primary election held on February 22, 2024, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where he secured 577 votes to defeat Shaibu and 10 other aspirants.

The court also found that Shaibu’s case lacked merit due to insufficient evidence and was statute-barred, leading to its dismissal.

This development clears the way for Ighodalo to contest the governorship election, and PDP supporters will be relieved that the legal hurdle has been overcome.

However, Shaibu’s camp may need to regroup and consider their next move after this setback.

The Edo State gubernatorial election is expected to be highly contested, and this court ruling is a significant development in the lead-up to the polls.
