Covenant University announces resumption dates, students to undergo COVID-19 test

Authorities of Covenant University, Ota in Ogun State have announced resumption dates for all categories of students in the institution.

In a memo to parents by the Resumption Committee 2019/2020, the university said its decision to reopen followed a positive response from the Ogun State Government.

According to the memo, all final year students are expected to resume on Monday, September 28, non-graduating 400 Level (CoE); Tuesday, September 29; all 300 Level students, Wednesday 30 September; all 200 Level Students, Thursday 1 October; and all 100 Level Students, Friday 2 October.

“Please note that SIWES Students:  Non-Graduating 400 Level (CoE); Non-Graduating 300L Level (CST) are not resuming. Students are to check their portal for details of their financial clearance and room allocation,” it said.

The university further said that information/instructions will be duly communicated, adding that every student is expected to resume according to the assigned date.

However, contrary to the Federal Government instruction to university management not to conduct COVID-19 test for students, the university said every student will only be allowed back to school “ONLY” after certification of fitness to resume which include a conduct of COVID-19 test. The students are expected to pay N10, 000 for the COVID-19 test to be conducted by the university.

To get this certification, each student will undergo COVID-19 and Medical Screening.

The university said, “ All returning students MUST undergo COVID-19 Screening/Clearance;  COVID-19 screening/clearances will hold at the Clearance Centre (CUSS ground); All returning students are required to pay a COVID-19 Screening fee of N10,000.00 (Ten Thousand Naira only);  payments will be at the Clearance Centre.”

It added that screening will include temperature check; travel history checks; COVID- 19 screening (Rapid Diagnostic Test -RDT); and disinfection of students’ bags and other materials.

The university said any suspected case will be required to return back with the parent(s) for further checks “and such a student shall return ONLY with certificate from NCDC.”

According to the university, COVID-19 Screening/Clearance opens 8.00am and closes 8.00pm daily.  “All students expected per day MUST wait at the reception ground (car park) to access the Screening/Clearance centre,” it said.

It added that parents are to stay within the car park and inside their vehicles while the screening lasted. “ONLY students will be admitted unto the Clearance ground,” the school authorities emphasised.

It added “All returning students are to ensure they resume to campus with the following infection prevention and control materials; Facemask (at least 2 pieces); Face shield; a bottle of hand sanitizer (500 ml). Students are to check their portal for details of their financial clearance and room allocation.

“SIWES Students are ONLY expected to resume in the new (2020/2021 session); 400 Level (CoE); 300 Level (CST); therefore, all SIWES students should continue with their Industrial attachment activities.”

“Please note that SIWES Students:  Non-Graduating 400 Level (CoE); Non-Graduating 300L Level (CST) are not resuming.”

It said regular medical checks and dress code. “Routine medical checks will continue as a final medical clearance for all students. University dress-code and rules subsist and must be observed at all times.”
