COVID-19: Lagos begins webinar training series for teachers

Lagos State government has begun a webinar series for its teachers. Tagged, “Safety Series for all Lagos State Post Primary School Teachers,” the Eko Educators Webinar Series 2.0, is being coordinated by the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).

Speaking during the webinar in Lagos on Wednesday, the state Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, commended TESCOM for its commitment and for organizing the webinar, adding that it would prepare school teachers in the state for the next level.

A statement by Kayode Sutton, Assistant Director, Public Affairs, TESCOM, quoted Muri-Okuola as describing teachers as nation builders, equipped and uniquely positioned to shape the minds and future of many through all the critical stages of human development. The head of service added that teachers possessed the greatest power of influence.

Muri-Okunola said, ‘’I must commend, not only the timeliness of this event, but the vision and demonstrated commitment of the Teaching Service Commission leadership in preparing Lagos State Public School teachers for the next level. It is common knowledge that knowledge, facilitated by conscious and deliberately structured educational process, is the foundation for all progress accomplished to date and achievable by humanity. Therein lies the critical incontrovertible role of teachers.’’

He added that the success of all the measures being put in place by the state were highly dependent on the quality and capacity of teachers. He said that the era of not being ICT complaint had ended, adding that there was the urgent need to adapt to new realities.

He urged the participants to see the opportunity as a privilege, and something that must not be taken for granted. He stated that teachers must continue to improve themselves in order to cope with the challenges of the new normal, adding that they should ensure diligence and continual publicity of all safety rules to prevent the spread of the COVID- 19 pandemic.

Also speaking at the event, TESCOM Chairman, Mrs. Olabisi Ariyo, said the issue of capacity building  of teachers  is top on the agenda of the Commission, as teachers   possess  great power of influence.  ‘’ it is from them we build a classroom, a school and educational system that is more inclusive for everyone’’ she said.

The Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Mrs. Toyin Awoseyi, urged all Post – Primary School teachers to avail themselves of other numerous Online training opportunities for self- development in order to be abreast of emerging trends in their chosen profession.
