The Nigerian government on Thursday extended the  second phase of the gradual easing of the lockdown in the country  by four weeks.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, at the bi-weekly briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, said the extension was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari after due consideration of  the task force’s recommendations.

Recall that Nigeria imposed its first round of lockdown in March. On April 27, a gradual easing of the five-week lockdown on Ogun, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory was announced. The lockdown was  later further eased from May 4 to May 17. Currently, the curfew in many states starts from 10 pm and ends 5am.

With the extension of the gradual easing of this lockdown, curfew will continue from 10pm in Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory and many states yet to fully ease the lockdown.

According to Mustapha, the extension will further strengthen collaboration with other mandate groups at federal and state levels  “to harmonise the country’s COVID-19 response, on the short, medium and long-term basis.”

The PTF  therefore urged states and the FCT to enforce the use of face masks in public places.
