Ekiti Gov Calls for Action Against Cultism, Cybercrime in Schools

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has voiced serious concerns over the increasing incidents of cultism and cyber fraud in the state’s higher institutions.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Nigeria Police Strategic Forum in Ado Ekiti, Oyebanji emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address these pressing issues.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana (retd.), the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security operatives in combating these threats.

“Cultism and cybercrimes are rampant in tertiary institutions in the state. The security agencies are up to the task. Our government will also continue to support the security operatives and ensure their best performance in tackling the menace,” Oyebanji stated.

The meeting, themed “Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Communities in the Protection of Education,” aimed to train the Schools Protection Squad in strategies for enhancing security in educational institutions across Ekiti.

The governor urged school administrators to intensify their efforts in curbing these social vices, assuring them of the state government’s support. “This administration will intensify its open-door policy to enhance the safety of lives and properties in the state,” he added.

Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeniran Akinwale, highlighted that the initiative was part of a broader strategy by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to secure schools nationwide. He expressed optimism that the program would significantly reduce attacks on educational institutions.

“The programme is geared towards guaranteeing the security of students and teachers and ensuring a safe and secure environment in all categories of schools in the country,” Akinwale noted.

He outlined measures to be adopted by the Schools Protection Squad, including bush combing, community policing, and visibility patrols, aimed at fostering a secure learning environment.

In his goodwill message, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, Head of the Safe School Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja, reiterated the importance of creating safe educational settings to protect students.
