The event, held at the Villa Banquet Hall, brought together notable figures including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as well as representatives from various sectors dedicated to women’s rights.

Alawuba opened his remarks by emphasizing the theme of the event: “Farming to Feed the Nation, Empowerment to Give Women Voices, Justice for Crimes to Have Consequences via Mobile Court.”

He stated, “Today’s event is a beacon of hope and a call to action for the holistic empowerment of women across Nigeria.”

Acknowledging the substantial contributions of women to agriculture—over 70% of the labor force—Alawuba pointed out that despite their pivotal role, many women farmers remain under-resourced and lack access to crucial tools such as financing and technology.

He emphasized, “Empowering women in agriculture is not only a moral imperative but an economic necessity.”

The UBA CEO highlighted the bank’s commitment to advancing gender equality, noting that nearly 50% of its board is female and 40% of senior management roles are held by women.

“With close to 78% of our Working Capital Loans supporting women-led enterprises, we are truly leading the charge for gender equality in the corporate world,” he asserted.

Alawuba called upon all stakeholders—individuals, civil society, and corporate entities—to contribute to the EMPOWERHER initiative, stressing that empowering women extends beyond charity; it is about justice and equality. “When women thrive, societies prosper. Your contributions will transform the lives of women, their families, and ultimately our nation,” he urged.

Also, Minister of Women Affairs, Barr. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has called for enhanced support from corporate entities and individuals.

Minister Kennedy-Ohanenye expressed the urgent need for a shift in focus from loans to sustainable support systems.

“It is disheartening to note that despite previous loan disbursements towards women and children, the desired impact has not been achieved.

Women continue to face economic hardships, making them one of the most vulnerable groups in our society,” she stated.

“With a strong commitment to uplifting women, we are poised to make a meaningful difference,” the Minister added.

Kennedy-Ohanenye’s appeal comes at a critical time, as many women in Nigeria grapple with financial instability and lack of resources.

The Minister emphasized that corporate social responsibility initiatives could play a pivotal role in fostering a more inclusive and empowering environment for women and children.

“We sincerely hope to have your presence and support at this important event. Together, we can create a more inclusive and empowering future for all,” she urged potential participants.
