In 2019, Obasanjo described el-Rufai as one of the best persons to work with and that he is a “near-genius and a man that you know where you stand with him. Any job given to him will be well done.”

On his part, el-Rufai, at a world conference in South Africa in September 2023, said the second term of Obasanjo was the most successful in terms of economic growth, job creation, and inflation rate in the history of Nigeria.

Obasanjo welcomes el-Rufai to his home

“If you look at Nigeria’s economic trajectory, the most successful four to five-year period of economic growth, job creation, and reduced inflation was the period of the second term of President Obasanjo in 2003 to 2007, when for the first time, the country went back into proper integrated planning and we also got lucky,” he said.

His recent visit to the former president’s home in Ogun comes less than two weeks after the conferment of a chieftaincy title on him in Ijebuland in the state.

Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, conferred the former governor with the title on December 16.

Meanwhile, the former governor of Kaduna is the first person outside the south-west to be conferred with a chieftaincy title by the monarch.
