The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has returned to the ruling All Progressives Congress from where he previously defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Yobe State Governor and Chairman of APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Committee, Mai Mala Buni , announced this in Abuja on Friday, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari was happy to receive the former Speaker back to the party.

Dogara alongside the immediate past President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and some lawmakers had defected to the Peoples Democratic Party from the APC ahead of the 2019 general elections. But Buni disclosed  that he led Dogara to meet with the President on Friday.

Although, Dogara,  a member of the House of Representatives,  is yet to speak on the issue, Buni said the President was happy about the development.

He said, “The President welcomed him. He is happy with the development. That is what he’s looking for. We are rebuilding the party and these are the steps we are taking towards rebuilding the party.”

Calling on other aggrieved members of the party to return, he said  members of his caretaker committee were meeting all aggrieved members, especially those  interested in returning to the party. He said this was the only way the party could be built to endure.

He said, “Without doing justice, you cannot achieve much.  This is what will help the consolidation of the party, the rebuilding of the party.”

Buni said the visit to the President was in continuation of efforts aimed at rebuilding the party.  While there are insinuations that the former Speaker’s defection was part of the 2023 politics, he said it was about building the party to last.
