A senior lecturer at the Federal University Lokoja in Kogi State was publicly humiliated on Friday after being accused of making unwanted sexual advances towards a female student, according to a report from The Nation newspaper.
The lecturer, whose full name was not revealed, allegedly angered female undergraduates in the English Department where he teaches when news of his alleged misconduct spread. The outraged students insisted on publicly stripping him down to his underwear as punishment, stating “his actions have caught up with him.”
University security personnel intervened to prevent further embarrassment to the lecturer at the Adankolo mini campus. During questioning, the lecturer implicated some of his colleagues, claiming they provided him with names of female students to pass or fail based on whether those students had sexual relationships with him.
Daniel Iyke, the university’s spokesperson, confirmed the institution was aware of the incident and had launched an investigation.
Iyke stated: “The university has its own internal mechanism for taking care of it. The report has been brought to the Vice-Chancellor’s attention, and he has set up a body to look into it. This was done immediately and the report or the outcome will be made known as soon as it comes out.”
Efforts by reporters to contact the alleged victim, who is reportedly the daughter of a serving police officer, were unsuccessful as she and her father were shielded from interacting with the media.
