The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are currently meeting to discuss the union’s strike notice.

ASUU had threatened to go on strike over the government’s alleged failure to meet its demands, which include improvements in welfare, university funding, and halting the proliferation of universities.

“We are open to negotiation and willing to listen to ASUU’s demands. Most of the issues raised by ASUU are being attended to,” said Minister of Education Tahir Mamman.

“For instance, the issue of exit from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) has since been resolved by the President. Bureaucracy is the reason for the delay in the implementation of that directive.”

ASUU’s demands include improvements in welfare, university funding, and halting the proliferation of universities across the country. The union has threatened to go on a nationwide strike if their demands are not met.

“We will discuss and resolve most of these issues by Monday,” said Mamman. “Most of the demands of ASUU started in 1981. Virtually all governments have had their fair share of ASUU strikes. But the President made a commitment during the campaign that a permanent solution would be provided this time, and he has shown that in his steps and actions.”
