FG to Spend N47.5bn on Upgrading 50 Secondary Schools

•NSSEC begins infrastructure intervention in selected schools nationwide

The Federal Government has announced plans to spend N47.5 billion on upgrading infrastructure in 50 selected secondary schools across the country.

This initiative is part of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission’s (NSSEC) mandate to intervene in the education sector.

Speaking at the  ceremony for one of the selected schools in Kogi state on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, stated that a Needs Assessment was conducted to identify areas of intervention. He noted that the upgrade of the 50 schools in the first phase will cost N47.5 billion.

Ajayi emphasized that this is just the first phase, and subsequent phases will follow. He urged schools not selected in the first phase to be patient, as they will be considered in future phases.

The NSSEC was established in 2021 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, with a mandate to cover senior secondary schools across the country.

Iyela said, “This is just the first phase, when this phase is completed then we can then report to the president and Minister and say we have finished completion of this phase so they can come and complete this project and we will move unto the next phase. So those schools that are not going to benefit from the first phase I want them to be patient after the first phase we will come to them.

“The intervention for the first phase will cover about N47.5bn for the 50 schools.”
