Do you want to kick back and relax in front of a new movie or series this weekend? There are certainly enough new additions to your favourite streaming platforms to see you through to Sunday night.

Manifest

Manifest is an American supernatural series created by Jeff Rake. The show premiered in 2018 but has garnered interest since it was added to Netflix, quickly becoming one of the most-watched shows of 2022 on the platform. The plot centres on the passengers and crew of a commercial airliner who suddenly reappear after being presumed dead for more than five years. As they rejoin society, the passengers begin to face the fact that their lives – and loved ones – are not the same as they were, while they also begin to experience guiding voices and visions representing events yet to occur, referred to as ‘callings.’

For Maria

For Maria is another movie that has been out for at least a year but recently gained prominence as it debuted on streaming platforms in 2022. The Nigerian film, directed by Damilola Orimogunje (who also co-wrote the film with Tunray Femi),  follows a mother struggling with postpartum depression after a complicated delivery.

The cast members are Meg Otanwa, Gabriel Afolayan, Tina Mba, Judith Audu, and Demi Banwo.

The Royal Treatment

The Royal Treatment, released on January 20, 2022, is one of the earliest releases of the year and is available on Netflix. The American romance film was directed by Rick Jacobson and follows New York hairdresser Izzy (Laura Marie Marano) as she seizes the chance to work at the wedding of a charming prince.  Izzy is now expected to choose between her duty and love as the time for the wedding draws closer.

Hotel Transylvania: Transformani

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania is the fourth and final instalment of the Hotel Transylvania franchise. Coming nearly four years after the last one, HTT is directors Derek Drymon and Jennifer Kluska feature directorial debuts.

In this instalment, former Monster hunter Abraham Van Helsing’s mysterious new invention disrupts a family made up of monsters and humans. The friendly monsters are turned into humans, while the human relatives of the monsters are transformed into monsters. With their new mismatched bodies, the family must find a way to switch themselves back before their transformations become permanent.

The Witcher (Season 2)

Two years after its September 2019 release, fantasy TV series The Witcher dropped another season in December last year. The series, created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and based on the book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowsk explores the legend of a magically enhanced monster-hunter called Geralt of Rivia. The mutated hunter is entrusted with protecting a princess with magical powers from the clutches of those who want to use her for malevolent purposes.
