The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that four international bilateral customers owe Nigeria a total of $14.19m for electricity supplied in the first quarter of 2024.

The customers, Para-SBEE in Benin Republic, Transcorp-SBEE in Benin, Mainstream-NIGELEC in Togo, and Odukpani-CEET in Togo, failed to make payments against the cumulative invoice issued by the market operator.

This is not the first time international consumers have failed to remit payments for electricity exported from Nigeria. In 2023, they failed to remit about $51.26m, according to industry data. Additionally, bilateral power consumers owed the Nigerian power sector about N7.61bn in 2023.

NERC has condemned the development, describing it as payment indiscipline that must be curtailed by the Market Operator. The commission is expecting the market operator to invoke the provisions of the market rules to address the issue.

Some bilateral customers, however, made payments during the quarter for outstanding Market Operator invoices from previous quarters. A total of $5.96m was paid by two international customers, and N505.71m was received from eight local bilateral customers.
