The news of his death was confirmed by Mr. Bola Bolawole, also a columnist and very close associate of the late Mr. Awe.

Bolawole told franktalknow that Awe lost his life in an accident along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday morning while on his way to attend the burial of a friend’s mother.

Earlier, his son,  Michael Awe Jnr had posted on his Facebook wall, “Michael Awe has dropped his golden pen and he will never pick it up again. Keep resting pops.”

His last article, titled, ‘Suicide: Women And Their Killer Tongues,’ referenced the reported death by suicide of an accomplished female accountant, identified as Folake Abiola, in the Lekki area of Lagos.

Abiola, who had reportedly been suffering from depression, was allegedly pushed to commit suicide by a caustic and emotionally traumatising WhatsApp message she received from an unidentified female acquaintance.

Awe’s last article would most probably rank as one of his most popular, given the number of times it was read and the huge reactions it elicited.

Meanwhile, a release by the family on Tuesday read:

“It is with great sadness but total submission to the will of God that the entire AWE Family of Akure, Akure South Local Government Area Ondo State announces the passing away of our son, brother, and father Michael Olusesan Awe (a k a Michael West).

“He was born on the 10th of September 1963 in Akure, Ondo state, and died on Saturday, June 11, 2022.

“Mike, as he was fondly called by friends and admirers, was involved in a ghastly motor accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

“He breathed his last at the Ogun State Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

“Mike is survived by an aged mother, children, and siblings.

“Burial arrangements will be announced later.”
