The House of Representatives, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other groups have joined the chorus of dissenting voices, urging the Federal Government to reconsider its decision.

“It is unacceptable to increase fuel price at this time when Nigerians are already grappling with economic hardship,” said Alhassan Doguwa, Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream). “We urge the government to suspend this recent increase and engage with stakeholders to find a more sustainable solution.”

The NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, described the hike as “thoughtless and unjustified,” saying it would only deepen the poverty and hardship faced by Nigerians. “The government must prioritize the welfare of its citizens and pursue policies that alleviate rather than exacerbate their suffering,” he said.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, rejected the hike, saying it was “a clear manifestation of the APC-led government’s insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians.”

However, the Executive Vice President (EVP) Downstream of NNPCL, Adedapo Segun, explained that the company was not responsible for the hike, saying petrol prices were determined by free market forces. “The PIA provides for unrestricted free market pricing of PMS,” he said. “What is sustainable is the unrestricted free market pricing of PMS. That way, competition takes over, and Nigerians will get the best.”

As the controversy rages on, Nigerians continue to groan under the weight of the hike, with many calling for a reversal of the policy.
