Fifteen people were killed as gunmen shot ‘randomly’ in a bar in Soweto, Johannesburg, police said today.

At least ten others have been injured, three of which are fighting for their lives in hospital.

The unknown gunmen fled the scene in a white Toyota Quantum minibus and are now on the run, said police, adding that it wasn’t clear how many were involved in the attack.

The incident happened around 12:30 am this morning according to Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela.

A press statement released by his office said the gunmen had been armed with rifles and 9mm pistols when they entered the bar.

The shooting comes exactly two weeks after the tragic deaths of 22 people at a tavern in East London.

Primary investigations suggest the people were enjoying themselves in the tavern.

‘They just came in and shot at them randomly,’ Mawela said.

Mawela added: ‘All of a sudden they heard some gunshots, that is when people tried to run out of the tavern.

‘We don’t have the full details at the moment of what is the motive, and why they were targeting these people.

‘You can see that a high caliber firearm was used and it was shooting randomly.

‘You can see that every one of those people was struggling to get out of the tavern.

‘The number of cartridges found on the scene indicated it was a group of people who shot at the patrons.’

Footage posted online shows the horrifying scene of the bodies of revellers laying on the floor, while others stand there in shock.

Elsewhere in South Africa last night, four people were killed at another bar shooting in KwaZulu-Natal. Eight others were rushed to the hospital.

Two armed men in a VW Polo stormed into Pietermaritzburg tavern around 8.30 pm before opening fire.
