A Manhattan grand jury has indicted disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein on new charges, prosecutors announced at a hearing on Thursday, September 12. The indictment, which remains sealed until Weinstein’s arraignment, is believed to include sexual assault allegations from three women.
Weinstein, 72, was not present at the hearing due to medical reasons, having undergone a heart procedure earlier in the week. Prosecutors began presenting their case to the grand jury in mid-August, detailing allegations of assaults that occurred between 2005 and 2016.
The new indictment is separate from the charges Weinstein is set to be retried on in November, related to allegations from Jessica Mann and Mimi Haley. Prosecutors have indicated they would like to combine the cases, but Weinstein’s defense team opposes the move.
Weinstein is currently serving time in prison while appealing a separate 2022 conviction in Los Angeles, where he was found guilty on three sexual assault charges and sentenced to 16 years in prison. His 2020 conviction in New York was overturned on appeal in April.
The latest development in the case against Weinstein marks another chapter in the ongoing legal battles faced by the former Hollywood mogul, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by numerous women.
