Despite the loss of hundreds of lives to flooding, the Federal Government has claimed to have spent N5.6 billion on erosion and flooding control in the first six months of 2024.

This is according to data available on the Open Treasury Portal, a public payments portal of the federal government.

The data shows that N5.642 billion was spent on erosion and flooding control, which is a fraction of the N167 billion budgeted for the same purpose in the 2024 fiscal year.

However, a review of Govspend data has raised concerns about the priority spendings of the Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government. The review shows that in two months between May and July 2024, the Presidency spent N14 billion on renovation of Presidential Quarters, Honorarium, Presidential Trips, and Purchase of Forex.

On July 19, the Presidency spent N150 million to pay for Presidential trips and other related expenses. This development is despite the fact that flooding has been responsible for 205 deaths across two states, and 225,169 persons have been displaced from their homes.

There have been concerns about the willingness of the government to spend on erosion and flooding control, despite billions received as ecological fund and despite the devastating impact of flooding. Not just the federal government, but even state governments have been accused of negligence in this regard.
