Ikoyi building collapse: Death toll now 20, rescue operations still on

The death toll in the 21-storey sky scrapper building that collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos on Monday  is now 20, according to responders at the scene of the incident.

The 20th body was recovered at about 8.54pm on Tuesday. Before then, the death toll was 19.

The body of a lady believed to be the personal assistant to the owner of the building was recovered at 4.13 pm.

Rescue operations are still on.

Scores of artisans brought in from across the country are feared trapped underneath the rubble of the building that collapsed around 1:56 pm on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Governor has ordered the indefinite suspension of the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki.

This is contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso on Tuesday. The state is also setting up a panel to investigate the cause of the collapse.
