Insecurity: 2 Nigerian governors impose curfews

The Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, and his counterpart from Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, have imposed curfews in their respective states.

Channels TV reported that the Anambra state government took the decision following an attack by gunmen in some affected communities.

The communities are Igbariam, Aguleri, Umueri, Nteje, Awkuzu and Umunya.

The secretary to the Anambra state government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, disclosed in a statement that the curfew which started on Monday, April 26, is expected to last between 7pm and 6am daily.

According to Vanguard, he urged the residents of the state living in the listed communities to obey the curfew order.

Professor Chukwulobelu stated that security personnel are on strict orders to enforce the curfew.

Similarly, the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, imposed a night curfew at all the borders Rivers shares with Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Imo.

According to The Nation, the governor took the measure following recent attacks and killings of security operatives by gunmen.

Speaking in a state broadcast on Tuesday, April 27, WIke disclosed that the curfew would take effect from Wednesday, April 28, by 8pm.

He said:

The Government of Rivers State has decided to restrict night movements into and out of the State from the land borders of the State.

“Consequently, a night curfew is hereby imposed and no person or vehicle is allowed into and out of Rivers State from 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. from tomorrow (Wednesday) 28 April 2021 until further notice.

“We wish to advise that those who have any legitimate need or reason to come into or go out of the State must do so before 8.00 pm when the curfew shall come into force daily.” 

Meanwhile, the Imo commissioner for entrepreneurship and skill acquisition, Iyke Ume has been shot by unknown gunmen in the state capital, Owerri.

According to the report, there was panic in the state capital, as the armed men also shot four other motorists during the attack on Sunday night, April 25.

One of the motorists was said to have been shot while driving an unmarked security vehicle at Orji, on Owerri-Okigwe road very close to the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters.
