Insecurity: Presidency Replies Senate, says only Buhari Can Remove Service Chiefs

The presidency has responded to Senate’s call on Nigeria’s Service Chiefs to step aside over the deteriorating security situation in the country.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media, Mr. Femi Adesina, the Presidency noted that appointment or sack of Service Chiefs was a Presidential prerogative.

The demand for the resignation of the Service Chiefs was put forward in a proposed amendment to the resolutions of the Senate moved by Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi (PDP – Osun East); and seconded by Betty Apiafi (PDP – Rivers West).

The upper chamber also urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to as a matter of urgency; provide modern equipment to enhance the operational capabilities of the armed forces.

Sponsor of the original motion, Senator Ali Ndume (APC – Borno South), while coming under Order 42 and 52 of the Senate Standing Rules, noted with concern the various reports of casualties among the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.

Responding to this resolution, Adesina said, “The Senate Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the Service Chiefs to resign or be sacked due to the multi-pronged security challenges in the country.

“The Presidency notes the resolution, and reiterates that appointment or sack of Service Chiefs is a Presidential prerogative, and President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, will do what is in the best interest of the country at all times.”
