COVID-19: Oyo State Cancels Third Term for Schools, Announces Resumption Date

Oyo State Government has cancelled the third term of the 2019/2020 session for primary, junior and secondary schools in the state.

The state government took the decision at the state executive council meeting held on Tuesday, according to the state Commissioner for Education, Olasunkanmi Olaleye.

Announcing the new development on behalf of the state Governor,  Seyi Makinde, Olaleye  said,  “The Oyo State Executive Council at its meeting today 21st of July 2020 has approved the academic calendar to guide resumption of schools and other associated educational activities in the State.

The new academic calendar indicated that  the  promotion exercise for pupils in the state would be based on first and second term continuous assessments.

“According to the approved calendar, Third Term 2019/2020 session has been cancelled and promotion of students for all affected classes will now be determined by First and Second Term Continuous Assessment,” he said.

He said the 2020/21 academic session will begin on September 21 and end on July 30, 2021. According to the new timetable,   pupils in primary six and  in JSS 3 and SSS 3, who had resumed on July 6, would go on holiday on July 30 and resume for their examinations. It stressed that SSS 3 students will resume “as soon as WAEC announces the date”.

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for JSS 3 students was fixed for August 10 to 18, 2020; competitive entrance examination into the schools of science was fixed for  August 19, 2020; placement/screening test for JSS1 would  hold on August 20, while placement test into technical colleges was fixed for August 28, 2020.

The calendar approved for the 2020/2021by the state executive council shows that First term would be between  September 21 to December 18, 2020; second term, January 11 to April 9, 2021; while  third term would be between May 3 and July 30, 2021.

“The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology enjoins all stakeholders and members of the public to take note of the details of the academic calendar,” the new calendar indicated.
