Militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have distributed Ramadan welfare packages to some residents of Borno and Yobe states.
According to SaharaReporters, the Islamic State-backed insurgency group are reportedly sharing bags of maize, rice, sugar, millet, beans and even cash gifts to residents of Borno and Yobe communities, where they have been committing murderous atrocities since 2016.
According to one security source, the duplicitous gesture is intended to lure residents of the communities to join the group’s ranks as militants.

“They (insurgents) claimed that the gesture was aimed at assisting villagers to perform Ramadan fast and Sallah with ease and happiness, the same villagers they killed their friends and family members,” the source said.
However, it has been observed in the past that providing services for beleagured communities is an efficient approach for recruiting new militants.
This development could spell further danger for the nation’s already frail security situation as banditry, kidnappings and attacks on security outfits have continued relentlessly over the past few months.
