In response to escalating violence amid the ongoing ‘Hunger and #EndBadGovernance’ protests, the Katsina State Government has announced a 24-hour curfew in the Dutsinma Local Government Area.

This decision was disclosed by Abdullahi Garba-Faskari, Secretary to the State Government, through a statement issued on Thursday.

The measures followed an emergency meeting of the State Security Council, which was prompted by reports of disorder in parts of the state linked to the national protests.

Earlier, the acting governor had met with a group of Civil Society Organizations who were peacefully demonstrating at the Government House. He assured them that their concerns would be communicated to the appropriate authorities. However, reports soon emerged that the protests had been hijacked by miscreants, leading to incidents of looting and vandalism of both public and private properties.

“These steps are essential to protect lives and properties in the state,” stated Garba-Faskari. He urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, as security agencies have been instructed to detain anyone violating the curfew.

Furthermore, the acting governor appealed to the public to continue their legitimate activities during periods when movement is allowed.

In a related development, the state police have begun enforcing the curfew. ASP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, the command’s spokesperson, clarified that contrary to some reports, police officers did not use live ammunition against protesters, and no fatalities have been recorded from police actions. “Our officers have demonstrated maximum restraint and professionalism in dealing with the protesters,” he affirmed.

This development follows similar actions taken in Kano, Borno, and parts of Nasarawa State, where 24-hour curfews have also been imposed.
