JUST IN: Unknown assailants attack INEC office, set it on fire

Unknown persons have reportedly attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office at Awgu Local government Area Office in Enugu State, setting the office on fire in the process.

Barrister Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee said the incident which occurred on Sunday morning, inflicted extensive damage on the building.

Quoting Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Emeka Ononamadu who reported the incident to INEC headquarters, Okoye said the damage affected the stores’ Section where Election materials are kept.

He said the Commission was fortunate to have evacuated moveable election materials following recent attacks on its offices in the State adding that there was are no casualties in the incident..

The identity or motives of attackers he said are unknown, while the incident has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation.

“The Commission appreciates the prompt response of the security agencies comprising the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as well the Enugu State Fire Service and the Awgu Local Government Neighbourhood Watch.
