Ensure unconditional release of others – UN tells Kankara govt

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has reacted to the release of the abducted 344 students of Government Science School Kankara in Katsina State of Nigeria.

Franktalknow recalls that the school boys, numbering 333 were released on Thursday night, six days after they were kidnapped.

Boko Haram leader had admitted they are responsible for the abduction but the Defence Headquarters dismissed it as the usual propaganda of the terrorist group.

However, Guterres in a note to UN correspondents on Friday, commended the swift action taken by the Nigerian Government to rescue the students.

He further called for the immediate and “unconditional” release of those still in captivity.

Guterres emphasizes the need to provide the released children and their families with the necessary health and psychosocial support, NAN reports.

Meanwhile, the secretary-general also called for increased efforts to safeguard schools and educational facilities in the country.

He reiterated the solidarity and commitment of the UN to supporting the government and people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime.
