The Federal High Court in Kano has commenced hearings on the ongoing Kano Emirates tussle, with a significant presence of security personnel in and around the court complex on Court Road.

The hearing on the restraining order against the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano was initially delayed due to a nationwide strike over the new minimum wage. The hearing, originally set for last Thursday, was rescheduled to today.

Previously, the Federal High Court in Kano had issued an order preventing the Kano State Government from enforcing the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law. Justice Mohammed Liman granted the order following an application by Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate.

During today’s session, the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) have positioned their vehicles strategically around the court to maintain order and restrict movement. Traffic has been diverted from Court Road to Zoo Road and the Gyadi-Gyadi area to ensure smooth proceedings.

The crisis began two weeks ago when Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf deposed Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, along with four other first-class Emirs of Rano, Bichi, Karaye, and Gaya. Governor Yusuf reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the Emir following the repeal of the law that former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje used to depose and exile Sanusi in 2020.

Sanusi, who was the 14th Emir of Kano, was removed in 2020 for alleged insubordination to the Ganduje-led government and was exiled to Awe in Nasarawa State.

In response, the Kano State House of Assembly, controlled by the New Nigeria Peoples Party, passed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024, replacing the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019. This new law dissolved the five emirate councils created by Ganduje, including Bichi, Karaye, Gaya, Rano, and Kano.

The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the future of the Kano Emirate and the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as its ruler.
