Kano outlaws Almajiri, says every child must attend conventional schools

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared that every child in Kano, including Almajiri, must be enrolled in conventional schools.

The Almajiri system of education, which is traditional to the northern part of the country, with Kano State having the highest number, has been outlawed by the state governor as a matter of policy.

Ganduje also insisted that all Almajiris repatriated to Kano from other states would be enrolled into conventional education system, adding that plans to incorporate them into the state free, compulsory primary and basic education had been concluded by his administration.

Recall that Kano State had evacuated about 1,172 Almajiri to neighbouring states while over 1,000 were repatriated to Kano from various states as well.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, who is also the Chairman of the Almajiri Evacuation Committee, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, said that 723 indigenous Almajiris had been reunited with their families with about 28 of them who tested positive to corona virus, already receiving treatment at the Isolation Centre. He spoke during the briefing of  Kano State Government Task Force on COVID-19.
